Breakaway Tackles
By Elizabeth Petersen

People needed: Whole team

Purpose: To develop strong breakaway tackle skills

Directions:

1. Set up a square grid that is approximately 30 x 30 meters.

2. Divide players evenly in two groups. The groups should form single file lines on the same endline, with one group lined up at the far left corner and the other at the far right corner.

3. The first player in the left line should have a ball and will be the runner. The first player in the right line will be the tackler.

4. On the whistle, the runner should start sprinting up the left sideline towards the opposite endline. The tackler should start sprinting from the right corner diagonally towards the left sideline, looking to tackle the runner.

5. Ideally, the tackle should be made from the side. The tackler should hit the runner low, driving the runner out of bounds.

6. If players are having trouble making the tackle, consider making the grid smaller or having the runner jog instead of sprint.
